Computers and IT data come in second place in the theft statistics (just behind cars). In France, 70,280 burglaries targeted industrial, commercial or financial premises in 2008, including 3,502 armed robberies; an increase of 20.47% on 2007. (Source: French Ministry of the Interior). Moreover, contrary to popular belief, 80% of burglaries occurin broad daylight, 55% between 2pm and 4pm.
According to the study conducted by Symantec in 2008, the number one cause of security incidents was indeed the loss or theft of computer equipment, including laptops and removable storage media. Finally,the danger of theft comes not only from the outside, as is shown in research by ArcSight according to which 59% of employees take computer data when leaving acompany.
